Mumbai Police Detain Youth Congress Protesters Seeking SIT in Satara Doctor’s Death

Opposition demands an independent SIT citing claims that a former MP is being shielded.

Overview

  • Indian Youth Congress held coordinated demonstrations on Monday at Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty and near Varsha in Mumbai to press for a Special Investigation Team.
  • Police said more than 200 protesters were intercepted and detained as marchers headed toward the chief minister’s residence, with several taken to Azad Maidan police station.
  • A senior Marine Drive police officer said 60–70 people were detained for protesting without permission and obstructing traffic, an FIR was filed, and those held were served notices and released.
  • Dr Sampada Munde was found dead on October 23 in Phaltan, with a note on her palm alleging repeated rape by police sub-inspector Gopal Badane and mental harassment by Prashant Bankar; both were arrested and Badane was dismissed from service.
  • The Congress has accused former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar of being protected, a claim he denies as the chief minister has given him a clean chit, while Prakash Ambedkar urged an unbiased SIT with reviews of post-mortems and call records.
