Mumbai Police Book 150 Over Dadar Pigeon-Feeding Protest as BMC Weighs Petitions to Ease Ban

Civic officials are taking public feedback on three proposals for controlled feeding before any permissions are considered.

Overview

  • An FIR was filed at Dadar police station five days ago naming 150 people on charges including unlawful assembly, mischief and disobeying orders under the BNS and Maharashtra Police Act, with no arrests reported.
  • Police said the case stems from an August 6 gathering near the Dadar Kabutarkhana where protesters tried to remove BMC covers and fencing and blocked peak-hour traffic.
  • The BMC has covered the Dadar site and posted warnings against feeding, citing health risks flagged by experts from pigeon droppings and feathers.
  • The BMC has opened a public consultation from August 18 to 29 and has received three applications seeking regulated feeding from the Dadar Kabutarkhana Trust, activist Dr Pallavi Sachin Patil and a long-time feeder at Mahalaxmi Race Course.
  • The proposals request fixed feeding windows, sanitation and site-specific assessments, with citizens invited to email suggestions or objections to the civic body by August 29.
