Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts through August 19 in anticipation of continued extremely heavy rainfall.
  • Mumbai recorded approximately 177 mm of rain in six to eight hours on August 18, leading to severe waterlogging that disrupted flights, trains and road traffic.
  • Seven fatalities have been reported across Maharashtra and five people are missing in Mukhed, Nanded district, where the NDRF, SDRF and Army are evacuating hundreds from flood-hit areas.
  • The city’s seven supply reservoirs have risen to around 91 percent capacity with Tulsi Lake overflowing, prompting controlled gate releases and coordination with upstream dam authorities.
  • Intense monsoon downpours have also deluged rural areas in Marathwada and Telangana, damaging nearly two lakh hectares of crops and isolating villages by overflowed streams and tanks.
