Overview

  • Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar has instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to float tenders within 15 days for covering the Versova RTS with overhead sheds.
  • The facility handles about 400–450 tonnes of daily waste in open piles that attract scavenging birds like crows and vultures, increasing the risk of aircraft bird strikes.
  • The dedicated committee will include representatives from DGCA, Adani Airport Holdings, MPCB and other agencies to coordinate and monitor mitigation measures.
  • Officials will invite start-ups, research institutions and citizens to propose innovative short- and long-term solutions for sustainable bird control.
  • The upgrade seeks to align with CPCB guidelines recommending a 20-kilometre buffer for open dumps, even though waste processing sites currently lack similar siting restrictions.
