Mumbai Opens Dabbawala International Experience Centre Featuring AI, VR Exhibits

AI, VR interactive experiences bring the 135-year-old dabbawala system’s history to life, establishing a tour fee model to fund its upkeep.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Mumbai Dabbawala International Experience Centre in Bandra West on August 14.
  • The 3,000-square-foot ground-floor space was allocated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the project was conceived in 2023 by MLC Shrikant Bhartiya.
  • Visitors can use AI-driven virtual reality goggles to simulate dabbawala delivery routes, play a tiffin-tracking game, and insert their faces into a virtual deliveryman.
  • A gallery of historic artefacts displays antique tiffin boxes, a photo wall with images of King Charles III, and the dabbawalas’ awards.
  • The dabbawala community plans a modest tour fee to support maintenance and address a post-pandemic workforce decline from about 5,000 at its peak to roughly 1,500.
