Mumbai Opens 5.25-Km Coastal Road Promenade as Traffic Goes 24/7

Featuring cycle tracks, shaded seating plus accessible underpasses, the 5.25-km public promenade marks the first phase of a larger seafront project to open over the next 18 months.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis virtually inaugurated the promenade on August 14 ahead of its public opening at 4:30 PM on August 15.
  • The southern stretch of the eight-lane Coastal Road began 24-hour vehicular operations from midnight on August 15 under CCTV surveillance and a dedicated control room.
  • The seafront walkway includes a dedicated cycle track, broad pedestrian paths, landscaped gardens, wheelchair-friendly ramps and shaded seating areas.
  • Four of 19 planned pedestrian underpasses—at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, Worli Dairy and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk—are now active to provide safe access.
  • Authorities say the remaining 2.5 km of promenade and additional underpasses will open in phased stages as finishing works and tenders conclude.
