Mumbai Monorail Shuts for Two Months on Chembur–Saat Rasta Line for Upgrades

Officials say the pause enables new trains, CBTC signalling and fleet refurbishment to tackle persistent breakdowns.

Overview

  • Services on the 19.54-km corridor are suspended from September 20 for at least two months, according to the operator MMMOCL under MMRDA.
  • The shutdown allows induction of new rakes, deployment of an advanced CBTC signalling system, refurbishment of older stock and integrated testing.
  • The move follows a spate of failures, including at least seven disruptions in the past month.
  • Recent incidents included an August 19 stall that led to the rescue of 1,148 passengers and a September 15 stoppage with 17 evacuations.
  • Officials say frequency is expected to improve to every 8–10 minutes from the current 20–25 minutes, while commuters report shifting to trains, buses, share taxis or bikes at higher cost and longer travel times.
