Mumbai Metro Line 7A Completes Final Tunnel, Enters Fit-Out Phase

Concluding the underground excavation paves the way for interior fit-outs, cross-passage construction followed by system installation ahead of its 2026–2027 opening.

Overview

  • The 1.65 km upline tunnel breakthrough on July 14 marked the end of tunnelling between Andheri East and CSMIA Terminal 2.
  • The tunnel features a 5.6 m finished diameter lined with 1 178 precast ring segments and navigated beneath Metro Line 3, the Sahar Elevated Road ramp and key sewer and water pipelines.
  • Overall work on the 3.17 km Line 7A extension has reached 61 per cent alignment completion and now shifts focus to station fit-outs and system integration.
  • J Kumar Infraprojects has managed the Rs 1 998-crore contract awarded in September 2019, covering viaducts, ramps, underground tunnels and two stations.
  • Once commissioned in 2026–2027, Line 7A will connect with Metro Line 3 at CSMIA and later link with Metro Line 8 to improve access to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
