Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2A Opens, Extending Underground Network to Acharya Atre Chowk

The new 9.77 km stretch from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis, begins public operations on May 10, marking a significant step toward completing the city’s first fully underground metro corridor.

Overview

  • Phase 2A of Mumbai Metro Line 3, spanning 9.77 km with six underground stations, was inaugurated on May 9, 2025, by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and will open to the public on May 10.
  • The newly operational stretch connects Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk, reducing travel time between these hubs to just 15 minutes with a train frequency of 6 minutes 20 seconds.
  • Mumbai Metro Line 3, India’s longest underground metro line, will span 33.5 km from Colaba to SEEPZ upon completion, with the final phase scheduled for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2025.
  • Funded 60% by JICA under Japanese Official Development Assistance, the project aims to serve 1.4 million daily riders, cut 650,000 vehicle trips, and reduce CO₂ emissions by 260,000 tonnes annually.
  • The metro features advanced commuter amenities, including air-conditioned trains and stations, platform screen doors, wheelchair accessibility, multilingual guidance systems, and real-time digital route maps.
