Mumbai Metro Line 2B Nears Completion with Phase One Set to Open by Year-End

Civil works have topped 80%, underscoring progress as trial runs move ahead on the initial 5.4 km segment.

Overview

  • Key structural elements including pile caps (98%), piers (92%) and girders (87%) are nearly finished and the Mandale depot stands 98% complete.
  • Trial operations began in April on the 5.4 km Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch, and officials aim to welcome commuters by December 2025.
  • The fully elevated corridor will span 23.64 km with 20 stations and will interchange with multiple metro lines, suburban rail, monorail and the planned Airport Rail Link.
  • Service will use six-coach BEML trains equipped with regenerative braking, CCTV and mobile charging points, with 60 of the 96 cars already delivered.
  • Full commissioning is planned between mid-2026 and late 2027, and the line is expected to cut travel times by up to 75% and attract over one million daily riders by 2031.
