Overview

  • On July 7, a Metro Line 1 train failed to reach target speed at Azad Nagar, triggering a 45-minute delay and stampede-like crowding at Ghatkopar station.
  • Mumbai Metro One Private Limited has submitted a proposal to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited via IDRCL to procure additional coaches and convert its 16 four-car rakes into six-car trains.
  • The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has convened a committee led by former chief secretary Johny Joseph to review the causes of frequent disruptions and oversee capacity and reliability improvements.
  • Short-term measures under consideration include restarting mixed-loop services between Ghatkopar and Andheri, deploying standby rakes and enhancing platform crowd-control protocols.
  • Metro Line 1 currently carries about 500,000 daily riders on 36 peak-hour trips at 3-minute 20-second intervals, straining infrastructure designed for six-car trains.
