Overview

• On June 5 between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm Kasam Sayyed is seen on CCTV picking up 15-month-old cat Kalu and hurling her from the ninth floor of GrowMore Onyx Society in Malad.
• The cat’s owner discovered Kalu’s body in the society compound and initially believed she had been struck by a vehicle before obtaining footage that contradicted that theory.
• An FIR was filed on June 12 by Malvani Police charging Sayyed under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 11(1)(I) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
• NGO People for Animals intervened to help secure the CCTV evidence and prompt the senior inspector at Malvani police station to act on the case.
• Local residents and animal rights groups have demanded strict legal measures as the investigation into the cat’s death proceeds.
