Mumbai Malaria Eases in September, Dengue Edges Higher as Civic Teams Scale Checks

Officials point to aggressive field work for the month’s shift in vector-borne trends.

  • Mumbai logged 1,411 malaria cases and 1,384 dengue cases in September, with malaria down from 1,553 in August and dengue up from 1,159.
  • Chikungunya cases fell to 139 from 220 in August, gastroenteritis declined to 442 from 592, hepatitis to 176 from 197, and only eight Covid-19 cases were reported.
  • The BMC surveyed 1,032,249 houses and collected 185,863 blood slides for contact tracing as part of its September surveillance drive.
  • Vector-control teams inspected 57,518 breeding sources, identified 3,691 Anopheles and 23,794 Aedes sites, and removed 61,802 discarded items and tyres.
  • Health teams held 63 camps, made 5,341 workplace visits, provided leptospirosis prophylaxis to 58,589 people, and ran festival outreach as clinicians reported some severe dengue and chikungunya cases.
