Mumbai Launches Dec. 22–28 Fire-Safety Inspections at High-Footfall Venues

The drive follows the Goa nightclub fire, enforcing provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.

Overview

  • Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade will check hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars, malls, gymkhanas, banquet halls and other crowded establishments before New Year gatherings.
  • Establishments found violating norms will face action under the 2006 Act, which makes owners and occupiers responsible for maintaining functional fire-safety systems and holding biannual compliance certificates issued in January and July by authorised agencies.
  • The campaign is being overseen by Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi, with Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar warning of strict enforcement.
  • During a similar special drive last year, officials inspected 731 establishments and took action against 12 for non-compliance.
  • The civic body will also station lifeguards, deploy rescue boats and place lifesaving equipment at major Mumbai beaches on New Year’s Eve to manage large crowds.
