Mumbai Hotspots Breach 300 AQI as BMC Warns of GRAP IV Curbs

City officials ready phased GRAP IV curbs after halting non-compliant construction at dozens of sites.

Overview

  • Mumbai’s overall air stayed in the moderate band around 172–176 on Monday, while Mazgaon logged very poor readings above 300 and several areas such as Deonar, Navy NagarColaba and Chakala–Andheri East remained in the poor range.
  • The BMC issued stop-work notices to 59 construction and ready-mix concrete sites for flouting dust-control rules and has deployed flying squads for ward-level inspections.
  • Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani outlined a phased GRAP IV approach that starts with water misting, deep cleaning and action against polluting units, with construction halts to follow if hotspots do not improve.
  • Officials said sites lacking real-time air-quality sensors face penalties, with a 30‑day installation deadline set to expire by the end of November to strengthen hyperlocal monitoring.
  • The IMD signaled light showers for parts of Mumbai linked to a developing system named Cyclone Senyar and indicated clearer conditions on Tuesday, as residents reported haze, low visibility and irritation complaints across the city.
