Mumbai Cyber Cell Arrests Two in ₹25 Lakh WhatsApp Trading Scam Targeting 79-Year-Old Doctor
Investigators are tracing mule accounts linked to other scams to identify the organisers.
Overview
- The Powai-based doctor joined a WhatsApp group after a July 17 promotional message and was given a trading ID on a counterfeit platform.
- Fabricated profits on the dashboard encouraged deposits totaling about ₹25 lakh before withdrawals failed and more money was demanded for a higher “score.”
- Transaction trails led officers to Dombivli, where Prashant Chaudhary and Richard Rao were arrested by the Western Region Cyber Cell.
- Police allege the pair supplied multiple bank accounts, withdrew victim funds for a commission, and passed the cash to the fraudsters.
- A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act, with the probe tying the same accounts to other scams and prioritising the hunt for the masterminds.
