Mumbai Customs Seize ₹8.47 Crore in Gold Smuggling Bust at Airport
Over 10 kg of gold was confiscated in four separate operations, leading to the arrest of five individuals, including three airport staff members.
- Mumbai Customs conducted four operations between March 13 and 15 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, seizing over 10 kg of gold worth ₹8.47 crore.
- Three private airport staff members were arrested for smuggling gold concealed in clothing, undergarments, and garbage bags from an international flight.
- The largest individual seizure involved 2.9 kg of gold dust in wax form, valued at ₹2.36 crore, hidden in an airport staffer’s undergarments.
- Investigators also recovered 3.1 kg of gold dust worth ₹2.53 crore from garbage bags containing trash from an international flight’s lavatories and pantry.
- Authorities are continuing investigations to trace the source and intended destination of the smuggled gold.
