Mumbai Crime Branch Arrests Two in Powai for Alleged IMEI Tampering of Stolen Phones

Police used a tip-off decoy to document browser-based IMEI changes that hinder tracing of blocked phones.

Overview

  • Following a tip-off, the Chembur Unit-6 team sent a decoy to Ram Mobile Service Centre in Tunga village, Powai.
  • During the sting, a mechanic allegedly altered a handset’s IMEI on the spot using software tools, which the accused said included Google Chrome’s “Unlock Tool.”
  • Owner Ramprasad Sargun Rajbhar, 37, and repair mechanic Gulam Rasool Rashid Khan, 21, were arrested after a raid that recovered altered devices, some identified as stolen.
  • Powai Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 65 of the Information Technology Act, and the accused were remanded to police custody until September 23 by the 37th Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
  • The case has been handed to the Crime Branch for continued investigation, with Unit-6 officers leading the probe.
