Overview

  • The BMC has removed 7.96 lakh metric tonnes of silt, reaching 82.31% of its 9.68 lakh tonne target for pre-monsoon desilting of major and minor drains.
  • Efforts on the Mithi River have reached 61.85% with 1.32 lakh tonnes cleared, hampered by early May rains and a Rs65 crore fraud investigation by the Economic Offences Wing.
  • An AI-powered dashboard now tracks silt removal in real time by linking truck number plates to weights and timestamps to flag irregularities.
  • Over Rs3 crore has been recovered from contractors penalized for malpractice, and mandatory 30-second videos and CCTV footage document every stage of desilting.
  • The civic body has deployed additional machinery and labour and plans to sustain desilting operations through and after the monsoon to bolster Mumbai’s flood defences.
