Overview
- A special CBI court in Mumbai convicted ex-PSI Sanjay Sudam Khedekar and ex-head constable Raghunath Vithoba Kolekar for assault and wrongful confinement in the 2009 death of Altaf Shaikh, awarding seven years in prison and a ₹62,000 fine each, with ₹1 lakh to the victim’s mother.
- The court acquitted the duo of murder due to conflicting medical opinions on cause of death but recorded that Shaikh was assaulted in custody; the sentence is suspended until November 7 to allow appeals.
- Shaikh, 22, died within hours of being taken from his home on September 11, 2009, after which the Bombay High Court transferred the case to the CBI following petitions by his mother, who now plans to seek a harsher sentence.
- In a separate case from Madhya Pradesh, the Supreme Court sought explanations from the CBI and the state for delayed arrests in the alleged custodial death of Deva Pardhi, noting that Uttam Singh was held on September 27 and Sanjeev Singh on October 5 only after contempt warnings.
- The bench asked for details of departmental action and listed the matter for November 6, also directing that a key eyewitness in custody be given limited phone access to family.
