Mumbai CBI Court Jails Businessman 4 Years in Insurance Fraud, Clears NICL Officials

The judge labeled the case an economic offense, saying the accused must surrender a wrongful gain of Rs 21.96 lakh.

Overview

  • Special Judge Amit V Kharkar convicted Pravin Daga, proprietor of Pravin & Co., for a false fire insurance claim and imposed a Rs 25 lakh fine.
  • The court said Daga wrongfully received Rs 21.96 lakh from National Insurance Company Limited and emphasized imprisonment over a reformative approach.
  • Investigators said the policy covered a Kurla location while the claimed fire occurred in Navi Mumbai on November 20, 2010, with surveyors misled about the site.
  • The CBI registered the case on March 28, 2018 and filed a charge sheet on December 29, 2018 against Daga and three NICL officials.
  • The three NICL officials were acquitted for lack of evidence, while Daga’s claim of having paid fire-extinguishing charges was found inconsistent with records.
