Mumbai BMC Bans Third-Party Transport of Wet Waste by Bulk Generators

A ward-level survey starting August 15 will track bulk generators’ compliance with the civic body’s new waste management directive.

Overview

  • The BMC has directed all 2,609 bulk waste generators to stop hiring third-party haulers and either treat wet waste on-site or hand it over to the civic corporation.
  • Establishments that meet on-site processing requirements will receive property-tax rebates calculated from the upcoming billing cycle based on waste treatment records.
  • Assistant chief supervisors will carry out a citywide survey from August 15 through 31 to document waste-handling methods and any fees charged by generators.
  • Large establishments must now register for mandatory domestic sanitary and special-care waste collection, with yellow dustbins distributed to registered sites beginning August 18.
  • To date, 3,536 establishments have enrolled in the sanitary-waste service, yielding roughly 202 tonnes of such waste collected since May.
