Mumbai Airport Customs Seize Over 13 Kg of Hydroponic Cannabis From Bangkok Arrivals, Arrest Two

The back-to-back Mumbai cases highlight a Bangkok-linked smuggling route targeted by Indian airport enforcement.

Overview

  • Customs at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport intercepted an arriving passenger from Bangkok on Monday and recovered 11.83 kg of suspected hydroponic cannabis valued at about Rs 11.83 crore from a checked-in trolley bag.
  • In a separate action on Sunday, Mumbai Customs found 2 kg of suspected hydroponic cannabis worth roughly Rs 2 crore concealed in another passenger’s checked baggage and arrested the traveller.
  • Pune Customs disclosed on September 7 that its Air Intelligence Unit had intercepted Bangkok arrivals on September 1 and seized 13.732 kg of suspected marijuana, arresting four passengers and a handler under the NDPS Act.
  • Officials said the Pune handler was waiting outside the airport to receive the mules, two of the four arrested passengers are women, and an investigation into the supply and distribution network is underway.
  • Authorities say recent cases in Pune and other airports point to repeated use of drug mules on Bangkok routes for high-value ‘hydro’ cannabis, with earlier DRI and August seizures reinforcing the widening probe.
