Mumbai Airport Customs Seize Hydroponic Weed, Exotic Wildlife and High-End Drones in Weekend Sweep

The arrests followed targeted checks based on intelligence about a Bangkok-linked smuggling route using checked baggage.

Overview

  • Officers at CSMIA intercepted three Bangkok arrivals carrying 1.964 kg, 1.93 kg and 1.933 kg of suspected hydroponic marijuana concealed in trolley bags, with an illicit value of about ₹5.82 crore in total.
  • The three narcotics carriers were arrested under the NDPS Act after the contraband was found hidden inside their checked luggage.
  • In a separate case, customs recovered live and dead exotic animals including 19 iguanas, 10 orange bearded dragons, a raccoon, a monitor lizard and squirrels, and arrested the passenger under the Customs Act and the Wildlife Protection Act.
  • Another passenger arriving from Colombo was caught with high-end drones valued at ₹32.19 lakh concealed in a trolley bag, with reports differing on whether seven or ten units were seized.
  • Customs said four passengers were arrested across the cases during operations conducted on October 4–5, and investigations are underway to identify handlers and international links.
