Mumbai Airport Conducts Full-Scale Emergency Drill Simulating Runway Fire at T2

Officials used the scenario to validate readiness during a period of heavy traffic.

Overview

  • The Nov. 27 exercise replicated an aircraft overshooting the runway and catching fire to test real-time crisis response.
  • Participants spanned ATC, the Indian Air Force, immigration, customs, CISF, Mumbai Police, Mumbai Fire Brigade, SDMA, NDRF, BMC’s disaster unit, ground handlers, airlines, hospitals, ambulance services, and nearby hotels.
  • CSMIA identified the Full Scale Emergency Exercise as a biennial safety practice, previously conducted in 2023 and 2021.
  • A separate report showed a high‑intensity drill using a dummy aircraft, with the IAF airlifting dummy passengers during the response.
  • The drill followed a planned Nov. 20 runway maintenance closure and a Nov. 21 peak of 1,036 air traffic movements.
