Mumbai Air Quality Shows Hotspots as Regulator Shuts 10 RMC Plants

Regulators tighten controls on construction pollution following severe local spikes.

Overview

  • The CPCB put Mumbai’s citywide AQI at 126 on January 8, placing it in the moderate range even as neighbourhood sensors reported higher levels.
  • AQI.in measured the overall AQI around 203–204 in the early hours of January 8–9, classifying conditions as unhealthy.
  • Several localities recorded very high readings, including Chembur at 323–342, Wadala up to 327, Deonar at 307, Sewri at 293–308, and Worli at 280.
  • The MPCB said it inspected 44 ready-mix concrete plants and construction sites over two days, ordered 10 plants shut, issued directions to others, and recovered ₹84 lakh from 17 plants in Kalyan, Navi Mumbai and Raigad.
  • Since December, the board reports inspections at about 240 RMC plants with ₹4.35 crore in fines, and the IMD expects temperatures near 20–21°C for lows and 32–33°C for highs.
