Multi‑State Raids Expose 'Digital Arrest' Networks and Mule‑Account Rings

Seized devices, bank transaction forensics, shell‑company records and SIM logs reveal how organised groups coerced victims and routed stolen money.

Overview

  • Police in Delhi, Latur and Mumbai carried out linked operations in early November that have produced dozens of arrests and produced evidence tying cases across states.
  • Investigators say fraudsters used a 'digital arrest' script—impersonating police, ED or ATS, using forged letters and threats—to coerce victims into transferring funds to so‑called verification accounts.
  • Probes uncovered organised infrastructure including about 70 mule bank accounts, roughly 187 fraudulently issued SIMs, APK‑based tools and paper or shell companies used to open current accounts for layering and transfers.
  • Seized items include mobile phones, SIM cards, cheque books, passbooks, rubber stamps and company documents, and forensic tracing linked scores of NCRP complaints and routed sums from lakhs to crores with some recoveries and partial refunds already processed.
  • Investigations continue with device forensics and bank‑transaction analysis under way, several suspects remanded to custody and police warning that following transaction traces is likely to expose more operatives and accounts.
