Overview
- The Servicio Sismológico Nacional recorded a series of small-to-moderate earthquakes on Aug. 26–27 that included a M4.3 about 148 km southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo and a M4.0 near Mapastepec, plus several M3.x events off Salina Cruz and near Ometepec and Teloloapan.
- Technical reports list focal depths from about 9 km to 115 km, and the variations in depth help explain why some quakes were felt lightly and others were largely imperceptible.
- Protección Civil and CENAPRED carried out routine checks after each event and confirmed no structural damage, no injuries and no tsunami alerts for the affected coasts.
- Scientists attribute the activity to the Cocos plate subducting beneath the North American plate, which produces frequent small shocks along Mexico’s Pacific south and is monitored in real time by the SSN network.
- Authorities urged residents to follow official SSN and Protección Civil channels for verified updates, to review family emergency plans and to report any damage so monitoring can continue and aftershocks can be assessed.
