Multiple Small Earthquakes Recorded Off Southern Mexico and Peru

Seismological agencies call the events routine plate movement, issuing ongoing monitoring plus public preparedness guidance.

Overview

  • National networks logged a cluster of low-to-moderate quakes on October 11–12 with the largest being a M4.1 off Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, and a M4.3 offshore Cañete, Peru.
  • Mexico’s Servicio Sismológico Nacional reported several M3.x–M4.1 events across Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero that ranged from very shallow (about 2–6 km) to deep (around 197 km).
  • Peru’s Centro Sismológico Nacional (CENSIS) of the IGP recorded the M4.3 event 41 km southwest of San Vicente de Cañete at a depth of 48 km.
  • Local civil protection offices and seismological agencies say no damage or injuries have been reported and they are monitoring for aftershocks and updating public data in real time.
  • The quakes reflect normal tectonic activity from Cocos–North America and Nazca–South America plate convergence, and authorities urge residents to follow official channels and basic preparedness steps.
