Multiple Earthquakes Hit Nepal, Largest Magnitude 6.1: National Seismological Centre of Nepal Confirms

Quakes hit Dhading region near Kathmandu, amidst a series of tremors ranging from magnitudes 4.3 to 6.1, no injuries reported yet.

  • A series of earthquakes ranging between magnitudes 4.3 and 6.1 have struck the Dhading region near Kathmandu in Nepal, with the National Seismological Centre of Nepal confirming the largest quake to be of magnitude 6.1.
  • The epicenter of the largest quake was at Dhading, about 55 km west of Kathmandu with no current reports of any injuries as per local authorities.
  • An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 also jolted Nepal earlier on the same day, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
  • Nepal, which is located on the ridge where the Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates meet, is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world.
  • Nepal's tectonic activity, with the Indian and Tibetan plates advancing two meters closer every century, results in regular earthquakes due to the pressure release.
