Multiple Deadly Road Crashes Hit Brazil’s Highways Over Weekend

Police and forensic teams have opened probes and a driver in Piauí was charged with homicide after suspected impairment at the scene.

Overview

  • A series of separate accidents on major roads produced multiple deaths and many injuries over the Oct. 17–18 weekend, with emergency crews responding across Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Piauí and Ceará.
  • A head-on crash on the MT-140 in Nova Brasilândia killed five people who were trapped in a car, and a collision on BR-364 in Diamantino killed four members of the same family including two young children; police and Perícia teams are investigating both scenes.
  • In Parnaíba, Piauí, police say a pickup truck entered the opposite lane and fatally struck a motorcyclist and that the truck driver showed signs of altered psychomotor function and was formally charged with homicide at the scene.
  • Several other crashes involved risky maneuvers or interactions with heavy vehicles, including a fatal motorcycle-versus-carreta collision on SP-270 and overtaking attempts that led to a multi-injury frontal crash on SP-425.
  • Firefighters, Samu and highway concession control centers carried out rescues and triage while hospitals treated the injured, and investigators from PRF, Polícia Civil and Politec are collecting forensic evidence to determine causes and legal responsibility.
