Overview
- A car traveling south on the northbound carriageway of the M9 collided head-on with another vehicle at Junction 3 near Moone in the early hours of Sunday, 16 August 2026.
- Gardaí confirmed a number of fatalities and said at least four people from the second car were taken to hospital with life-threatening or serious injuries, including two adults to Tallaght University Hospital, a woman to St. Luke’s and a child to CHI Crumlin.
- The stretch of the M9 between Junctions 3 and 4 is closed in both directions for a Garda Forensic Collision examination and local diversions are in place while investigators process the scene.
- Investigating gardaí have appealed for anyone who was on the M9 between 2:00am and 3:00am to provide witness statements or dashcam footage to Athy Garda Station or the confidential line to help reconstruct the crash.
- Fiosrú has been notified and its on-call investigators attended the scene to open an independent inquiry into whether any police actions or omissions contributed to the deaths, a step that follows a similar Fiosrú review of a wrong-way M50 crash earlier this month.
