Multiple Crashes Snarl UK Motorways as M5 Collision Seriously Injures Motorcyclist

Most closures lifted by late morning following a coordinated emergency response.

Overview

  • A multi-vehicle collision on the M5 southbound between J4 (Rubery) and J4a (M42) involved two HGVs, a car and a motorbike, with a woman rider treated for potentially serious injuries and taken to Alexandra Hospital.
  • All lanes on the affected M5 stretch reopened by around 10am with traffic largely back to normal by 11am after earlier queues of up to five miles and delays of about 50–80 minutes.
  • On the M42 southbound between J11 and J10, a collision left one lane closed and caused roughly five miles of congestion, adding about an hour to journey times, according to National Highways.
  • The M6 northbound at the Thelwall Viaduct (J21) saw a multi-vehicle crash that briefly closed all lanes before reopening just before 8:45am, with residual delays of around 65 minutes reported.
  • Later updates reported a vehicle fire and queues on the M62 westbound near Chain Bar with one lane closed, while an A1(M) northbound crash near Doncaster was cleared with all lanes reopened and delays easing.
