Multiple Arrests Follow Busts of Mule‑Account Cyber‑Fraud Network

Investigators say the operation relied on forged KYC plus bank insider facilitation to route fraud proceeds into crypto and cash across the country.

Overview

  • Delhi Police uncovered a network that used 37 alleged mule bank accounts to receive about Rs 7.36 crore and arrested six people, including a private bank branch manager, after a probe begun with an FIR registered on June 17.
  • Authorities say suspects opened accounts with forged KYC documents taken from daily‑wage labourers, arranged SIMs and forged signatures so fraud proceeds could be moved without the real account holders’ knowledge.
  • Forensic seizures in Delhi included laptops, mobile phones, 11 SIMs, seven cheque books, 63 Aadhaar cards and 60 PAN cards that police say were used to open and operate mule accounts.
  • The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday arrested advocate Rashesh Upadhyay in a widening money‑laundering probe that alleges a pan‑India digital‑arrest network routed transactions thought to total nearly Rs 28,000 crore through about 400 mule accounts and used angadiya payoffs to unfreeze accounts.
  • Separate city cyber units in Surat, Mumbai and elsewhere have made linked arrests and traced conversions into USDT and other wallets, and investigators warn that hundreds of complaints and coordinated technical forensics will be needed to trace cash withdrawals, crypto wallets and the officials and intermediaries allegedly involved.
