Multi-Day Storms Set to Soak Vancouver Island

Environment Canada warns successive Pacific systems will bring intense hourly rain with coastal gusts causing localized flooding, road washouts, fallen branches, power outages.

Overview

  • The weather office issued a rainfall warning and a yellow alert for much of Vancouver Island on Thursday as the first potent system arrives and is expected to peak overnight into Friday.
  • Environment Canada forecasts 80 to 120 millimetres of rain for western and northern Vancouver Island with up to 150 millimetres in higher terrain and hourly rates that could top about 10 mm for several hours.
  • The heaviest totals are expected between Tofino northward and inland to communities such as Port Alice, Zeballos, Tahsis and Gold River while Metro Vancouver is forecast far lower totals near 20 to 30 millimetres.
  • Coastal gusts could reach about 110 km/h on the north and central coasts and around 60 km/h in Metro Vancouver, raising the chance of fallen branches and short-term power outages because many trees still have leaves.
  • The first system runs Thursday into Friday followed by another Saturday–Sunday, lingering showers Monday and a further system Monday night into Tuesday, so repeated rainfall and runoff could produce short-term flooding and road washouts over several days.
