Multi-Day A40 Closure and Two A43 Weekend Shutdowns Scheduled in Ruhr

Officials say the short October shutdowns will ready the A40/A43 corridor to carry diverted traffic during a planned eight-month 2027 A45 closure for a bridge replacement.

Overview

  • The A40 will be fully closed in the Essen direction between Kreuz Dortmund-West and Dortmund-Lütgendortmund from Monday evening, October 19 at 19:00 until Friday morning, October 23 at 05:00 to allow pavement renovation.
  • The A43 at Bochum-Gerthe will be shut for two weekend stretches from Friday 21:00 to Monday 05:00 on October 16–19 and October 23–26 to strengthen the Castroper Hellweg bridge.
  • Traffic during the A40 shutdown will be routed via the A45 to Kreuz Dortmund/Witten, then the A448 to Kreuz Bochum/Witten and back onto the A40 via the A43, with local detours signposted for shorter trips.
  • Authorities and local media warn commuters and holiday drivers to avoid the affected stretches where possible and to expect longer journey times because weekend and multi-day closures will shift heavy traffic across the Ruhr network.
  • The October works are explicitly preparatory: officials say they must complete reinforcement and resurfacing now so the A40/A43 can serve reliably as diversion routes when the A45 is closed for eight months in 2027 to replace the Martener Straße bridge.
