Overview
- All 13 spillway shutters at Mullaperiyar Dam were raised on the morning of June 29, initiating controlled releases targeting 250 to 1,000 cusecs.
- Inflow into the reservoir reached approximately 5,867 cusecs while outflows through the penstock and Irachipalam canal measure about 2,117 cusecs.
- The India Meteorological Department has placed Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram and Wayanad districts under yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
- Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and district officials are monitoring river levels, preparing relief camps and advising residents along the Periyar River to move to safer sites.
- Multiple weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and Kutch region are forecast to sustain rainfall in the dam’s catchment and could necessitate additional water releases.
