Météo France Warns of Level-4 Avalanche Danger Across Alps, Pyrénées and Corsica

Fresh snowfall loading a persistent weak layer has left the snowpack widely unstable with easily triggered wind slabs.

Overview

  • Most Alpine massifs are rated 4 out of 5 this weekend, with authorities urging people to avoid mountain travel outside marked and open pistes.
  • In the Pyrénées, level 4 applies above roughly 1,800 meters in Haute-Bigorre, Aspe-Ossau, Couserans, Haute-Ariège and Capcir outside secured ski areas.
  • All Corsican massifs are at level 4, while the Bauges, Chartreuse, Vercors and Mercantour remain at level 3.
  • Forecasters report numerous wind slabs forming from Friday night into Saturday on leeward slopes under strong north‑west winds, with avalanches potentially reaching size 2 to 4.
  • Snow flows or avalanches are also possible in the Massif Central and the Vosges, while no specific risk is identified in the Jura for now.
