Overview
- The MTA will run major weekend outages from Friday nights through 5 a.m. Mondays across the next five weekends, with the program continuing through Aug. 24.
- Under the plan, 1 trains will not run south of 14th Street, 2 trains will operate only to 34th Street–Penn Station, and 3 train service will be suspended on affected weekends; the agency will reroute service so 5 trains run into Brooklyn and 4 trains cover 3’s Brooklyn stops.
- The agency also announced regular weeknight service changes for the 1, 2 and 3 lines that will run through Aug. 21 to allow additional overnight work.
- A dispute over advance notice has emerged: Councilmember Christopher Marte said his office learned of the plan on July 2 and criticized short notice, while the MTA says it notified community boards and elected officials on June 22.
- Riders are urged to plan extra travel time because the work is meant to preserve reliability on a century-old system and could shift crowding and trip patterns onto alternate lines and buses.
