MTA Scales Back Fare Plan, Keeps $3 Ride as Board Vote Nears

A flood of rider feedback prompted the agency to scale back parts of the plan ahead of a board vote next week.

Overview

  • The seven-day OMNY cap for subways and buses would rise to $35, a $1 increase rather than the initially proposed $2 jump.
  • Single subway and bus rides are still slated to go to $3, with changes targeted for January to align with the MetroCard phase-out and full OMNY rollout.
  • Express bus fares would increase to $7.25 with a $67 weekly cap, while LIRR and Metro-North single, weekly and monthly tickets would rise by an average of 4.4%, including a 25-cent hike to City Ticket.
  • Commuter rail rules would be eased by extending ticket validity until 4 a.m. the next day and expanding the $1 family fare to cover up to four children under 18 at all times.
  • A planned 4.4% increase for Metro-North’s West of Hudson service was dropped, and officials said public comments were roughly four times higher than during the 2023 fare debate.
