MTA Proposes January 2026 Fare and Toll Increases Ahead of OMNY Phase-Out

Public hearings are scheduled this fall before the MTA board votes on the plan to shore up revenue through biennial rate hikes

Overview

  • Subway and bus fares would rise from $2.90 to $3 on Jan. 4, 2026 under the MTA’s proposed biennial rate adjustment.
  • One-way peak fares on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North would increase about 4.4% while Connecticut plans separate 5% hikes in September 2025 and another 5% in July 2026.
  • Express bus rides would cost $7.25 with a new unlimited weekly cap of $67 under the OMNY payment system.
  • Tolls on MTA bridges and tunnels would climb by 7.5% to help cover operating costs.
  • MetroCard sales will end in December 2025 as the agency completes its transition to OMNY ahead of next year’s fare changes.
