MTA Probes Bronx 4 Train Separation as Service Recovers After Evacuation

Transit officials ordered inspections of R142 cars and said automatic brakes stopped both sections with no injuries reported.

Overview

  • Cars on a southbound 4 train separated near 149th Street–Grand Concourse around 5:20–5:30 p.m. Sunday, with reports differing on whether two or three cars detached.
  • Rescue trains, FDNY and NYPD moved passengers to safety, with the Daily News reporting 60 people evacuated from the front section and 178 from the rear, and no injuries.
  • Service on the 4 and 5 lines between the Bronx and Manhattan was suspended for hours and later restored in time for the Monday morning commute, with riders directed to the 2 and D trains and buses.
  • New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said the braking system engaged as designed, bringing both separated sections to a safe stop.
  • The MTA launched an investigation and is inspecting the R142 fleet used on the 2, 4 and 5 lines, while the cause remains under review and a Daily News source attributed the separation to a mechanical failure.
