MTA, LIRR, Metro-North and DC Metro Detail Christmas and New Year’s Service

Reduced holiday service gives way to New Year’s Eve boosts with DC fare waivers.

Overview

  • In New York City, subways run regular weekday service on Dec. 24 and switch to Sunday schedules on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Many NYC bus routes operate on reduced weekday schedules Dec. 24, 26, 29, 30 and Dec. 31, while select Queens routes, Staten Island buses, the B100, B103, BM1–BM5 and all BXM routes keep weekday service on Dec. 24.
  • The MTA will increase subway service on multiple lines for New Year’s Eve, the LIRR will add 11 evening inbound and 12 overnight outbound trains, and Metro-North will run extra late-evening and post-midnight trips.
  • WMATA confirms Christmas Day rail on a Weekend Late Night schedule, New Year’s Eve rail running until 2 a.m., free bus and rail from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. via a Coors partnership, and free parking on Christmas Day and from 8 p.m. New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day.
  • MTA Bridges and Tunnels pause daytime construction heading into the holiday, with no road closures permitted on Dec. 24 or Dec. 25 and limited off-peak work resuming afterward.
