MTA Ends MetroCard Sales as OMNY Becomes NYC’s Subway and Bus Fare System

The agency projects about $20 million in yearly savings from the switch.

Overview

  • Dec. 31 marked the final day to buy or refill MetroCards as the system transitions to OMNY tap-to-pay.
  • Existing MetroCards will continue to be accepted into 2026, with a final cutoff date to be announced by the MTA.
  • OMNY allows payment by contactless bank cards and smartphones, and it already accounts for more than 90% of subway and bus trips.
  • Fare capping grants unlimited rides for seven days after 12 paid trips, and with the January fare rising to $3 the weekly cap will total $35.
  • New Yorkers marked the change with public farewells and museum exhibits, while some riders voice privacy concerns about the digital system.
