MTA Begins Overnight 4 Train Split Service as BronxManhattan Switch Replacement Moves Forward

The project replaces decades-old switches to cut mechanical delays and is slated to finish in late February.

Overview

  • Overnight from about 11:45 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., the 4 now operates in two sections, Woodlawn to 149 St–Grand Concourse and 3 Av138 St to New Lots Av, making all local stops in Manhattan.
  • On five consecutive weekends from Jan. 23 to Feb. 23, the 5 will run as a Bronx shuttle between Eastchester–Dyre Av and E 180 St, with the split 4 pattern also in effect during those periods.
  • Free shuttle buses will connect 149 St–Grand Concourse and 3 Av138 St, and riders are urged to use the 2 or D trains or Metro-North’s Hudson and Harlem lines, with subway fares cross-honored.
  • Weekday rush-hour adjustments from Jan. 26 to Feb. 20 will reroute some 4 trains to 3 Av138 St and send some 5 trains over the 2 line between 149 St–Grand Concourse and Nevins St.
  • The MTA says replacing roughly 37–40-year-old switches south of 138 St–Grand Concourse will improve reliability and support safe operations for years.
