MTA Audit Finds NYC Subway Bathrooms Open but Missing Basic Amenities

The report proposes nine fixes, most of which NYC Transit accepted.

Overview

  • Inspectors reviewed 32 of the system’s 125 public bathrooms and found 27 open and five closed.
  • Of the open facilities, 23 — or 85% — lacked at least one essential item such as toilet paper, soap, a garbage can, or a working stall lock.
  • Among 37 toilets examined, 10 were stainless-steel bowls without seats in both men’s and women’s rooms.
  • The audit cited inconsistent classification of repair severity and weak communication about restroom locations and availability.
  • The watchdog urged steps like ensuring toilets have seats and adding QR feedback, while NYC Transit accepted most recommendations, questioned the QR idea, and highlighted reopenings and upgrades at 60 stations since pandemic closures.
