Overview
- Family, friends and fellow veterans gathered Saturday at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla as a plaque was unveiled for Maj. Robert L. Barto on his 100th birthday.
- Barto served in the Marine Corps during World War II, landing with the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima and earning a commendation for bravery as a stretcher bearer under fire.
- After the war he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, trained as a pilot, flew cargo missions during the Korean War, and later received an Air Medal in 1967 for combat crew service in Southeast Asia.
- Memorial executive director Neil O’Connell said Barto’s story embodies dedication, noting the plaque will permanently enshrine his legacy at the site.
- Relatives reflected on his service and values during the ceremony, as the memorial continues to add 3–5 new tributes weekly with more than 200 plaques in development and over 6,500 veterans already honored.
