MSRDC Proposes 10-Lane Upgrade for MumbaiPune Expressway by 2030

The agency plans a post-Diwali approval push using a hybrid annuity PPP funding model.

Overview

  • MSRDC outlined a plan to widen the 94.6 km corridor from eight to ten lanes to ease weekend and festival congestion and meet rising demand.
  • The agency targets appointing an implementing partner by March 2026, with work starting in 2026 and completion aimed for 2029–30, subject to approvals.
  • An additional Rs 1,420 crore is estimated for the upgrade, taking construction costs to Rs 8,440 crore and overall project cost to Rs 14,260 crore.
  • Officials expect minimal land acquisition because most adjoining land is MSRDC-owned, with small pockets near tunnel zones potentially required.
  • Toll rights currently run to 2045 and may be extended to bolster project viability, and the widening would complement the ongoing 13 km Khandala Ghat ‘missing link’.
