Overview
- In Peru, festivities from the afternoon of Dec. 24 through dawn on Jan. 1 bring fireworks and loud music that can trigger fear, stress and accidental poisonings in dogs and cats.
- Owners are urged to create a quiet indoor refuge with the pet’s bed, a garment carrying the owner’s scent, soft music or TV at medium volume, and closed windows with heavy curtains to dampen flashes and noise.
- Anti-anxiety vests or shirts that provide gentle pressure are recommended, with introduction days in advance so pets are accustomed before peak noise.
- A long walk between 3 and 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 is advised so dogs are tired and more likely to rest during fireworks.
- During dinner, offer safe treats—plain cooked turkey without skin or salt, cooked carrot, seedless apple or dental snacks—and avoid scolding, instead rewarding calm behavior.
