MS Rossini Refugee Ship Closes After Two-and-a-Half-Year Operation

The county will transfer the final 52 refugees to permanent land-based housing following two and a half years of the ship serving as emergency shelter.

Overview

  • On July 30 the Landratsamt Regensburg decommissioned the MS Rossini and began relocating its final 52 occupants.
  • Since February 2023 the vessel has accommodated 632 asylum seekers, reaching a peak of 190 residents on board.
  • The last group to move ashore are mainly refugees from Iran and Syria who have now been placed in permanent housing.
  • Regensburg officials chartered the former hotel ship to spare school gymnasiums and expand emergency shelter capacity.
  • In February 2024 the ship was moved from Donaustauf to Bach an der Donau to protect local fish during the spawning season.
